Darlington beat the big freeze by ensuring that this game went ahead and then secured a vital home victory with a 2-1 success against Barnet.

The Quakers raced into a 2-0 and appeared to be coasting to victory, but the visitors pulled one back and finished the stronger leaving the home side hanging on at the end.

Darlington began the game brightly and withstood the freezing conditions. In the fourth minute a long range shot from Simon Johnson fell wide of the target and, three minutes later, Barnet keeper Ross Flitney had to race out of his goal to deny Neil Wainwright.

The visitors weathered the early storm and they almost took the lead in the 14th minute when Brian Close cleared off the goal line to deny Jason Norville.

Four minutes later Norville looked certain to score again when he rounded Darlington keeper Bertrand Bossu, but a last ditch tackle by Shelton Martis kept the score line level.

In the 36th minute Bossu received lengthy treatment after colliding with Matthew Clarke inside the area, thankfully he was able to continue and soon afterwards the home side took the lead.

From a Martis free-kick that struck an upright Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu was on hand to tap in from close range.

Darlington increased there lead in the 52nd minute when Wainwright broke clear down the left and he centred for Johnson who fired in from close range.

Darlington were coasting at this point and almost increased there lead in the 63rd minute, but an acrobatic save from Flitney denied Tresor Kandol.

The visitors stormed forward towards the end looking to get something from the game and substitute Dean Sinclair fired wide in the 80th minute with a shot from inside the area.

Darlington missed a glorious chance in time added on when Carlos Logan broke clear only to be denied by Flitney.

The ball was quickly launched forward and Darlington failed to clear their lines allowing Ben Strevens to fire in a consolation goal in the dying seconds.
