Barnet 1 York City 3

Barnet gave a dispirited performance and crashed to a 3-1 home defeat against newly promoted, York City on Saturday. Manager, Mark Robson began with the same side that started the game against Bristol Rovers. Young striker, Jamal Lowe was given a place on the bench.

Barnet started the game dreadfully and looked effectively out of the game within just over the first quarter of an hour. York started much the liveliest and went ahead on 7 minutes when Daniel Parslow saw his defected shot beat a despairing Liam O’Brien to put the visitors 1-0 up.

If Barnet could think themselves a little unlucky to go behind due to a deflection then they had only themselves to blame when on 16 minutes, Barry Fuller got badly caught out by York’s Ashley Chambers who was left to run clear on goal and comfortably fire past O’Brien to put York 2-0 up.

To be honest, Barnet did look two goals worse than York who were made to look like a class act, so woeful was the home side’s performance. Barnet gave themselves hope on the half hour, when Andy Yiadom made a fine run down the right and crossed well for Jon NURSE to neatly slip the ball home to put the Bees back in the game.

However, Barnet failed to take advantage of the goal and conceded again on 45 minutes, former Grimsby striker, Michael Coulsen turning well to place a fine shot past O’Brien to make it 3-1 to York. Barnet’s defence looked quite static and at fault with all three York goals.

The second half saw some improvement in Barnet’s performance, but to be honest they failed to really create any real clear cut chances. To be honest, it was York who looked more likely to increase their tally, though in the last 10 minutes or so, Barnet’s play did improve largely through a spirited show from Ricky Holmes. The Bees did look better when they reverted to playing 4-3-3, particularly after Olly Lee replaced Jon Nurse, who had to be stretched off for what seemed a nasty injury, but which does seem to be not so bad as first thought. On 90 minutes, Jamal Lowe came on for a first senior appearance.

Altogether, it was a thoroughly depressing performance, possibly one of the worst seen at Underhill for some time and gave scant hope that the Bees will finish anywhere in the table but where they currently find themselves, which is bottom of the Football League. Only Yiadom, Holmes, Byrne and Brown looked the part and it looked like a busy time lies ahead for Mark Robson if things are to improve. I guess it’s the loan market again.
