Southend booked their passage into the second round of the FA Cup after a narrow 1-0 victory over Barnet at Underhill.

In form Freddy Eastwood fired Southend into early lead with their first attack.

The striker struck a left-footed shot from the edge of the box that took a slight deflection and seemed to take Ross Flitney by surprise.

The Bees keeper was left flat-footed as the ball nestled into the bottom corner of the net.

Conceding so early seemed to spark Barnet into life and the hosts really began to carry the game to their League One opponents.

Dean Sinclair, scorer of Barnet's consolation goal at Old Trafford recently, almost scored again on 19 minutes.

The pacy midfielder burst clear of Southend's attempted offside trap but, with Bart Griemink rushing out to narrow the angle, Sinclair failed to beat the keeper at his near post as he deflected his low drive behind for a corner.

The Bees were extremely unlucky to go in at the break behind.

Both sides came out determined to attack in the second half and it made for a far more enjoyable second half than the first.

Flitney was forced into two superb saves directly after the restart which set the tone for the rest of the game.

First he parried well to keep out Shaun Goater's close-range volley and then he was called into action two minutes later, diving full length to keep out Eastwood's low strike that was destined for the bottom corner.

Despite dominating for long periods, Barnet were done by the visitors' better quality up front.

The Bees backline struggled to cope with Eastwood and Goater who were a handful all afternoon.
