Barnet’s opening home game of the season disappointedly ended in a goalless draw at Underhill yesterday. Barnet were without  injured players; Joe Devera and Steve Kabba. Manager, Mark Stimson chose to play with only one main striker up front, Ricky Holmes with new on loan signing, Phil Walsh left on the bench.

Barnet produced some nice football, but unfortunately most of it took place outside of the opposition penalty area. Chances were few and far between though Mark Byrne almost got on the end of a fine cross by Glenn Poole in the first half. Glen Southam and Mark Byrne stood out for the Bees in midfield, while the defence looked very solid, with new centre back, Darren Dennehy outstanding, winning virtually everything.

Barnet certainly played most of what football there was and early in the second half they did have a good spell of pressure which culminated with a fine run and shot by Ricky Holmes, which produced a fine save from keeper, Adam Legzdins. Mark Stimson obviously wants the team to play attractive football with more ball to feet and not hoofing the ball out of defence which was often a feature of last season, but the team desperately needs more firepower up front. Ricky Holmes showed a lot of potential, but he does need to have more support than he is getting at the moment and it must be said that the return of Steve Kabba can’t come quickly enough.
