Bees take on Canaries in Carling Cup 1st round tie

After Saturday's 0-0 draw at Morecambe, the Bees travel to Carrow Road to play Championship side, Norwich City in the 1st round of the Carling Cup. Norwich are managed by Peter Grant, a former Barnet player who played for City the last time these two teams met in the League Cup in 1997. Then the tie was played over 2 legs and after losing the 1st leg at Norwich 2-1, Barnet won the return at Underhill 3-1 to win 4-3 on aggregate.

On Saturday, Norwich started the new season with a useful 0-0 away draw at Preston, a side that made the play offs last season. Norwich finished 16th with a reasonable home record but, like the Bees, were let down by poor form away from home.

Goalkeepers

David Marshall was signed from Celtic, in the summer after a short loan spell at Norwich last season. He has been capped twice by Scotland and has been called up for the Scotland squad to face South Africa next Wednesday.

Matthew Gilks was signed from Rochdale in the summer, where he was ever present for the 'dale in the last 2 seasons.

Defenders

Right back, Jon Otsemobor signed in summer from Crewe. Previously with Liverpool and Rotherham and had loan spells at Bolton and Hull City.

Adam Drury, who plays at left back, signed in 2001 from Peterborough, where he made 142 league appearances. Has made 240 league starts for City.

The two centre backs are Jason Shackell who has made 75 league starts for City. Jason, who was made City's team captain during the summer, came up through the youth academy and became a first team regular last season with 42 league starts and 3 goals. Gary Doherty is a full N. Ireland international signed from Spurs. Was rather a bit part player at White Hart Lane but since his move to Carrow Road in 2004 has been a regular in the City defence.

Midfield

Lee Croft was signed from Man. City a year ago, having also played for Oldham on loan. Plays on the right side of midfield and started 33 games last season scoring 3 goals.

Julien Brellier is another summer signing. He joined from Hearts, where he started 44 games in two seasons.

Luke Chadwick was signed last season from Stoke City but was injured soon after. He was previously with Man. Utd and West Ham and had loan spells at Burnley and Reading. Can play on the right or in central midfield.

Mark Fotheringham joined in January having previously played for Celtic and Dundee.

Jimmy Smith has signed on loan from Chelsea. He spent much of last season on loan with QPR where he made 22 starts scoring 6 times. However, he will miss the game against Barnet due to injury and has returned to Stamford Bridge for treatment.

Darel Russell signed in the summer from Stoke City having made 166 starts. Started his career at Carrow Road.

Simon Lappin was signed earlier this year from St.Mirren.

Strikers

Darren Huckerby was player of the year last year for 2nd time in 4 years. Signed from Man. City 4 years ago having also played for Newcastle, Coventry and Leeds and had loan spells at Millwall and Nottm Forest. Darren has scored 35 times in 151 league starts for Norwich. He will miss the game with a groin strain.

Dion Dublin is a 37 year old striker with a lot of experience having played for Celtic, Coventry, Leicester, Aston Villa and Man Utd. He made his league debut 16 years ago for Cambridge United and has been capped for England. Joined Norwich last summer.

Jamie Cureton signed in the summer from Colchester, where he scored in his club's 2-1 defeat at Barnet in the FA Cup 3rd round. Has also played for Reading, Swindon Town, QPR and Bristol rovers and had a loan spell at Bournemouth. Scored 27 league goals for Colchester last season and has scored 174 league goals in his career. Is in his 2nd spell at Norwich, where he started his career 11 years ago.

Chris Brown was signed in January from Sunderland. He has had loan spells at Hull City and Doncaster.
