MATCH PREVIEW: Rotherham United

Last Updated : 25-Sep-2009 by
Barnet travel to the Don Valley Stadium this Saturday to meet Rotherham United in a League Two match. The Bees won the corresponding fixture last season in an exciting 4-3 victory (see Classic Encounters on Barnet Mad website for an article on this match) and completed the double over the Millers at Underhill in April with a 2-0 win.

Both clubs have made fine starts this season after their problems in the last campaign. In fact it's something of a top of the table clash with 3rd place at home to 4th. Last Saturday, both clubs drew their league matches, Barnet coming from behind to earn a point in an exciting 2-2 draw at home to Bradford City, while Rotherham were held to a 1-1 draw at Cheltenham Town.

Rotherham have appointed Ronnie Moore as their new manager this week to succeed Mark Robins who has left to become the new manager of Championship club, Barnsley. Moore was manager of Tranmere Rovers before being sacked at the end of last season. He was manager of Rotherham between 1997 and 2005 before taking up the job of managing Oldham Athletic and is a popular figure with the Rotherham fans. He lead Rotherham to promotion to Division 1 (now the Championship in 2001).

Rotherham were relegated from League One in 2007, having suffered a 10 point deduction and the following season, in League Two, they suffered another 10 point deduction and finished 9th. Last season, they started with a 17 point deduction and finished 14th. The points' deduction cost the Millers a play off place and a chance of promotion. Happily, this season they start the season on a level playing field with all the other League Two teams.

The Millers have won five and lost just one out of their opening 8 league matches this season. Their only League Two defeat was away at Bournemouth in August and they are unbeaten in their last six league matches and unbeaten at home in the league so far this season.

In the Carling Cup, Rotherham beat Championship club, Derby County 2-1 at home in the 1st Round and only went down 4-3 after extra time at WBA in the 2nd Round. In the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, they lost 2-1 at home to League One, Huddersfield Town.

During the summer, Rotherham lost last season's leading scorer, Reuben Reid to Championship club, WBA but have signed two good strikers to replace him in Tom Pope from Crewe Alexandra and the prolific, Adam Le Fondre from Rochdale. The club also signed Kevin Ellison from Chester City who were relegated to the Conference last season. Ellison scored for Chester against Barnet at Underhill last season.

Rotherham have also signed the experienced Paul Warne from Yeovil Town for his second spell with Rotherham, who he served between 1999 and 2005 and Sheffield United's Nicky Law, who had a spell at Bradford City last season.

Barnet have a full squad to choose from ahead of tomorrow's game. Gary Breen is standing by for his first game of the season and fellow central defender, Daniel Leach is also fit. Full backs, Joe Devera and Kenny Gillet, who came on as substitutes last Saturday against Bradford City, in place of Ryan O'Neill and Ahmed Deen are in contention for a place in the starting line up after impressing, particularly Gillet whose cross was headed home by John O'Flynn for the Bees' first goal. Manager, Ian Hendon has a difficult job selecting the back four for tomorrow's game, such is the strength in depth this season.

Meanwhile, Albert Adomah has had his nose reset and is likely to be fit to start tomorrow's game after coming on as substitute last Saturday. If he does start then, Hendon will have to decide between Yannick Bolasie and Albert Jarrett for the left wing place. Up front, Paul Furlong returns after suspension and he is expected to start with Jake Hyde missing out.

Rotherham caretaker manager, Steve Thornber has a fit squad to choose from as well.

With both clubs having started the season well it promises to be a close match. Barnet Mad hopes that they are wrong but we are going to predict a 2-1 win for the Millers.
