PAST TIMES: Stockport County

The two sides first met in season 1993/94 after Barnet had been promoted to Division 2 (now League One) the previous season. In their first meeting, at Edgeley Park, Stockport won 2-1, Barnet’s goal coming from a Kelly Haag penalty. By the time the two sides met at Underhill, in April, Barnet were already doomed to a quick return to Division 3 (now League Two). The match ended goalless.

The next time the two clubs met was in the 2005/06 season following Barnet’s return to the Football League after being relegated to the Conference in 2001 and then winning the Conference title in 2005. The game at Edgeley Park ended in a 1-1 draw, Barnet being somewhat unlucky not to come way with all three points after Jason Norville had equalized for the Bees. The match at Underhill was Barnet’s last home game of the season and both clubs were fighting against relegation. The match was a cagey affair and ended goalless, but both clubs ended the season safely securing their League Two status.

The following season, 2006/07, saw Barnet lose 2-0 away at Stockport, the side dropping to 22nd, only above the relegation zone on goal difference. The return fixture, at Underhill in March, saw Barnet claim their first ever win over Stockport, Oliver Allen, Dean Sinclair and Liam Hatch scoring for the Bees in a 3-1 victory.

In 2007/08, Barnet completed an unlikely double over Stockport, who ended up being promoted via the play-offs. Goals from Adam Birchall (2), Josh Wright and Ashley Carew gave the Bees an excellent 4-2 win at Edgeley Park, Barnet’s first ever.

The return fixture, at Underhill, was on the last day of the season with Stockport needing to win to have a chance of automatic promotion. However, Barnet won 2-1 on the day with goals from Jason Puncheon, in his last appearance for the Bees and a late winner from Cliff Akurang.
