PAST TIMES: Hayes & Yeading (Part Two)

On the resumption of football after World War 2, Barnet and Hayes met each other in the Athenian League in season 1945/46, Hayes winning 3-1 at Underhill and the two teams playing a goalless draw at Church Road. Hayes won again the following season at Underhill, this time 3-2 while Barnet gained a rare victory at Church Road winning 3-1.

In 1947/48, Barnet completed a league double over Hayes winning at Underhill and 3-1 at Hayes. In 1948/49, Hayes won 3-0 at Underhill, but a fortnight later, Barnet gained revenge winning 1-0 at Church Road.

In 1949/50, Hayes did the double over Barnet winning 1-0 at Hayes and 5-3 at Underhill. Barnet’s poor form against Hayes continued the following season as they drew 4-4 at Underhill and lost 3-0 at Church Road. In 1951/52, the Bees lost 7-0 at Church Road, though they did win 4-2 at Underhill. They repeated that score in 1952/53, but lost 1-0 at Hayes. In 1953/54, Barnet and Hayes drew 2-2 at Underhill, while at Church Road, Hayes won again, 3-2. Barnet fared better the following season winning 3-2 away at Hayes for the first time since 1948, while the game at Underhill ended in a 2-2 draw. In 1955/56, Barnet again won at Church Road, this time, 1-0 and the game at Underhill again ended 2-2. 1956/57 saw another draw at Underhill, 1-1, while Hayes won 3-0 at Church Road.

Barnet gained their first win over Hayes at Underhill since 1951/52, the following season winning 4-0, but they lost 3-1 at Hayes. In 1958/59, Barnet completed the league double over Hayes for the first time since 1948, winning 5-1 at Church Road and then 2-0 at Underhill.

In 1959/60, the two clubs met five times!!! In September, they played a goalless draw at Church Road in the league and then, in January, they were drawn to play each other at Underhill in the 1t round of the FA Amateur, the game ending in a 1-1 draw, with Hayes winning the reply 3-2. A fortnight later, the two sides drew 2-2 at Underhill in the league and then, in March Barnet won 2-0 at Underhill in the semi final of the London Challenge Cup.

In 1960/61, Barnet did the double over Hayes winning 3-0 away and 4-1 at Underhill. In 1961/62, Hayes won 1-0 at Underhill in the 3rd round of the London Senior Cup and then won 2-1 at home in the league, Belger scoring for Barnet. Belger scored twice for the Bees in a 6-0 league win at Underhill, Finch also scoring twice and Edwards and Figg scoring the other goals.

In 1962/63, Barnet completed the double again winning 5- 1 at Church Road and 3-1 at Underhill, while the following season, the game at Church Road ended 1-1 and Barnet won 4-1 at Underhill. In 1964/65, the Bees won 7-2 at Church Road and drew 1-1 at Underhill. Barnet were Athenian League champions for the last time as they joined the Southern League and turned professional.

The two clubs didn’t meet again until 1979, when Chris Hullett scored the only goal of the game for Barnet in an FA trophy 3rd qualifying round match at Hayes. The two clubs met in the same trophy at the same stage in 1983, again at Hayes, Barnet winning 3-1 with two goals from Steve Mahoney and one from Stewart Atkins. In 2000/01, Barnet were relegated from the Football League and met Hayes the following season in the Nationwide Conference. The game at Underhill ended in a 3-1 win for the Bees; Greg Heald, Mark Arber and Neil Midgley scoring for Barnet. The last meeting between the two sides was the return fixture at Church Road, Barnet winning 2-0 with goals from Frazer Toms and Danny Brown. At the end of the season, Hayes were relegated.
