Classic Encounter: Barnet v Wycombe 2006/07

Last Updated : 14-Sep-2010 by

Wycombe came to Underhill on the final day of the 2006-07 season. Both clubs had little to play for accept pride as both were going to finish around mid table. For many of the Bees players though it was to be their last game in a Barnet shirt. Some of the players like Adam Gross and Magno Veira had already been informed that they were going to be released, while others left during the summer.

Of the 16 man squad that day 8 players have left. Simon King and Barry Cogan to Gillingham, Adam Gross and Ross Flitney to Grays Athletic, Nicky Bailey to Gillingham, Dean Sinclair to Charlton, Oliver Allen to Stevenage Borough and Magno Vieira to Crawley Town.

The match turned out to be quite a lively affair, not typical of many 'end-of-season' affairs with a lot of lively interaction between the two sets of supporters. After just 3 minutes, Oliver Allen had a shot pushed away by Wycombe keeper, Jamie Young and this was followed by another effort from Allen and one from Adam Birchall. Sergio Torres then went close for the visitors and it was Wycombe who took the lead just past the half hour, when former Underhill favourite, Scott McGleish was played through by on- loan Chelsea starlet, Anthony Grant. McGleish in acres of space, but looking well offside, had as much time as he liked to slid his shot comfortably past Lee Harrison in the Barnet goal. Two minutes later and again from what looked like an offside position, McGleish almost turned provider but Mooney missed badly when well placed.

Things got worse for the home side when, five minutes from the end of the first half, Adam Gross was somewhat unluckily sent off for a second bookable offence, a late challenge from behind, in his last appearance for Barnet. Then in stoppage time, that man, McGleish almost put Wycombe 2-0 up but his shot hit the foot of the post and bounced into Harrison's arms.

HT 0-1

The home side had a big hill to climb in the second half, behind and playing with 10 men, but in less than 10 minutes they were level. On 53 minutes, a Nicky Bailey free kick was headed across the goal by skipper, Ian Hendon and was headed home by Dean Sinclair, playing in what turned out to be his last game for the club.

Barnet were now in control, but it seemed that a winning goal just wouldn't come. Nicky Nicolau played a one two with Allen but saw his fine shot come back off the bar and Young saved from a fine swerving Jason puncheon free kick.

A minute before the end, however, Barnet stole the three points, when Young pushed away a Dean Sinclair shot from the edge of the penalty area only for Magno Vieira, another player playing his last game for the Bees,  to slide it home for the winner. Ironically, Magno now plays for teh Chairboys!! There was still time for Young to save at the feet of Sinclair and McGleish to shoot just wide but it was the home side that finished the season with a win. The win enabled Barnet to finish in 14th place, two places and three points behind Wycombe.
